JACK
1. When did you start the project Jack?
Once I had heard the Metal Box by PIL (Public Image Limited), around 1980.

2. On the back of your record sleeve it simply states text and music by Jack.

Yes, I wrote the songs, played the guitar, bass, synthesizer and also sang. I did pay for a drummer, but the rest was all me. I also designed the sleeve and was in charge of the entire production.

3. What was the name of the drummer and what happened to him afterwards?

I honestly can’t remember his name or what became of him.

4. When did you release your 7″ single and how many copies were pressed?

It was a run of 500, released sometime in late 1981 or early 1982. I don’t know the exact date.

5. Did you record in a studio and, if so, which one?

It was a cheap studio in Geneva. I remember, because it just had an 8-Track tape machine.

6. You mentioned that the music of PIL’s Metal Box (1979) inspired you, in what way?

The sound, the attitude, the non-conformism of the music. It was like “anti music” and, at the time, absolutely new and radical. The Sex Pistols were more Rock, while PIL was entirely different… for me, like something from outer space.

7. The songs on the record, “Armee And Fuck-off Tout Le Monde” and “Théologiquement,” deal with issues that greatly concerned young people in Switzerland during the early 1980s. Can you explain your focus on these specific topics?

At that time, I was a rebel. I never liked the army. I was about 20 years old and scheduled to do my military service, just like everybody else at my age. Luckily, I failed the physical exam due to a congenital eye disease. Yet, I had to pay hefty military taxes because I didn’t serve. Unbelievable! I have a health problem since I was born and then was punished for something that is not even my fault? For that reason I wrote the song “Armee And Fuck-off Tout Le Monde.” The second track, “Théologiquement,” deals with my dislike for priests and religion in general. I think that any religion divides, manipulates, and brutalizes people… it also creates terrorism.

8. Did Jack ever play live? If so, where and with other bands?

No, it was just a studio project. But, I did play in some other bands that did live gigs in Geneva. For example, Tribunal, a local Post-Punk band that was heavily influenced by The Stranglers.

9. How long did Jack exist? Why did you end it?

Jack is actually still alive because it is my nickname. However, the music has changed since then. At the time of the 7″ record, I was all about rebellion and attitude. Although, my feelings are actually still the same nowadays with regard to military and religion.

10. I’m not sure if you are aware that your single is one of the most sought-after Swiss Post-Punk records. Yet, the search for you took more than five years! Especially, because the many musicians and sources in the French part of Switzerland knew nothing about Jack. Considering that it is your nickname you surely must also be known as such?

Probably not. Because, as a musician I have always been something of a chameleon. Right now, for example, I’m doing more 1960s Rock and 1970s Hard Rock music. As for my nickname, it is what it is… I reckon, kind of discreet!

11. What bands did you know during the early 1980s Geneva Post-Punk scene?

Tribunal, of course. Also, The Yodler Killers and Technycolor.

12. Unfortunately, I don’t know Tribunal. The Yodler Killers and Technycolor were two Punk bands from the late 1970s and barely existed in the early 1980s. May I suggest some other acts that were concurrent at the time of the Jack release and that you might have known. Film de Guerre or Boulevard Helvetique, both with former members of Technycolor. Then, also Discolokosst, The Teenage Girls From Auschwitz, The Xerxes Von Munsrhein, The Indian Feast, Copulation, Electric Toys, Code or The Zero Heroes.

I definitely knew Discolokosst and The Zero Heroes since these were some of Geneva’s finest bands!!!

13. Did you also have a job at that time? What else did you do?

I was a salesman in a TV-shop and really liked to play those first arcade video games that were just coming up in the early 1980s.

14. What about any further music projects after you had released the Jack record…

In 1988, I decided to enrol in a music school by the name of “Rock Musician Institute” in Hollywood, CA (www.mi.edu). I stayed for one year and returned to Geneva, where I gave guitar lessons until 1999; both, private lessons and professionally at the music school ETM (www.etm.ch). I still make music and have bands in the French part of Switzerland and neighbouring France.

Jack & The Rippers – a brief history lesson
After hearing the Sex Pistols, the brothers John (voc) and Francis Seilern (guitar / voc) decided to start a Punk Rock band. They were still living in Vienna at the time. They then returned to Geneva in October 1977 and formed the Jack & The Rippers, together with André Tieche on drums and Babine on bass. They had all previously played together in a Rock ‘n’ Roll band called The Thunderbirds. The Rippers had their first show about two months later in a cellar at the Rue de Monthoux. They played almost exclusively songs by the Sex Pistols: including “Anarchy in the UK”, “God Save The Queen” and “Holidays In The Sun.” Most likely, also “Automobile” (a favourite tune of the Rippers) by the little known British punk band The Rings and, of course, “Sheena Is A Punk Rocker” by the Ramones. In January 1978 André left the band to become an aid worker in Africa and he was replaced by Philip Turrian on drums. A few months later Francis, John and Babine heard that André had been shot by rebels in Angola.
Against all odds, the band continued playing gigs in every club in town: at the Midnight Rambler, Backstage, New Morning, Grütli, and on March 2 at the opening of the Back to Mono record shop. In April 1978 they recorded ten tracks with Michel Engeli at the THC Studio. All but two songs were own compositions. “Cold Turkey” by John Lennon and “Automobile” by Alan Lee Shaw of The Rings were cover versions. A demo tape of these recordings was then released, which additionally included the song “Endless Peace”, in memory of André. On June 7, 1978, they played their last gig – a tribute concert for André – at the Midnight Rambler. Over a year later, on November 26, 1979, Urs Steiger released the first (and only) Jack & The Rippers 7″ single on “Another Swiss Label”, featuring the two songs “No Desire” and “I Feel Like A Tram.” A second one, with the tracks “Safe And Secure” and “Don’t Pretend”, was planned for Christmas of that year. To-date, this 7″ has been never officially released. Shortly thereafter, John, Francis and Babine formed a new band called The Zero Heroes; together with Sandro Sursock from the prior Thunderbirds and Bastards.
In response to the question whether or not the Rippers would ever perform live again, John has a clear answer: Do I think it’s over?… No, I know it’s over!

The Story of THE JACK RABBIT BAND

A Girl For Murder“ aufgenommen. Die LP „ A Girl for Murder“ erschien schlussendlich im Frühling 1982.

The Jellyfish Kiss

[The band used the name in reference to a famous German children’s book by Michael Ende, published in 1960. It tells of the adventures of an orphaned black child Jim Knopf – mailed by post to a place called Lummerland – his friend Lukas the engine driver, and a locomotive called Emma.]
Pre-Christmas Zurich-East 1981: Lukas B. aka the train engine driver (vocals, guitar), Urs K. (bass, ex-Liars) aka Jim Knopf, and a drummer from Lukas’ circle of acquaintances (his nickname was something like “Jackson” or “Jason”) meet each other in a fashion that, in all truth, remains complete speculation. Whether it was an ad, through mediation of a colleague, or sheer coincidence, is not known. Nevertheless, the three of them work themselves through the songs written by Lukas B. and soon achieve a considerable repertoire of punky power-pop numbers.
Peter B. (drums, ex-Liars, The Jack Rabbit Band), a friend to Jim Knopf, then replaces the first drummer prior to the studio sessions and joins in as the locomotive.
That was the birth of Jim Knopf und Lukas der Lokomotivführer. A trio, of whom no one knows much of anything, despite “immortalizing” two tracks on vinyl in Spring of 1982. The recordings in the Platinum Studio in Oberehrendingen were done on tape and a cool cover was made by the, at the time, aspiring graphic artist Markus Thommen (who later worked with music magazines such as Pop, Musik Express and Bravo). The 7″ single was pressed but the planned promotion tour fell through. As a result, only a handful of the singles were given away to friends and acquaintances.
A few copies also reached various radio stations and according to rumours, at least the listeners of the show Sounds! on DRS3 were able to hear “TV-Time” and “Je t’aime.”
Lukas B. thereafter emigrated to New Zealand and absconded to a farm. He remained musically active-creative and nowadays lives partially back in the home country of Switzerland. With old friends from his very first youth band, he creates new singer-songwriter-pop-rock-songs, along with a variety of live gigs and CD productions in the studio.
Jim Knopf, attended the Swiss Jazz School in Berne; at the time, the first jazz school on a academy of music (Konservatorium) level, finishing the programme as a professional musician and music teacher. Thereon followed 23 years in IT as a software developer and, additionally, by the age of 53 the successful completion of an apprenticeship as a motorbike mechanic. Nowadays, he works independently and lovingly on old bikes and those that remain young. For sure, he would not be averse to any new punky musical activity. Punk rules!
Peter B., continued to work the drumheads in two dozen different groups. In Cyprus, where he emigrated first, he gained the title of “loudest drummer on the island!” In Thailand, the second station of his hike and where he intermittently is considered missing, he operates as a farang drummer within the realm of illegality and, therefore, occasionally hides in the jungle. One of his last signs of life was his book published in 2012.

1995, Sortie du -last but not least- dernier album du Jivaros Quartet Fever led us there sur Little records, le label “maison” créé pour l’occasion.

Jivaros Quartet
